US Men Squeak By Japan, Also Missing Team Insignia

7 Aug

The US men’s soccer team was far from impressive, echoing the performance  of the women’s team the day before, but they managed to get the three points against Japan on the strength of a goal from Stuart Holden. What I found more interesting, though, was the fact that the team was missing the official team crest on the jerseys and shorts, another way that they mirrored the women’s showing. See how they normally look here. Still looking for a reason why, so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

USA Women Fall to Norway, Lose Official Badges

6 Aug

It all happened so fast.  Today in Beijing the Olympics quietly kicked off with the first round of women’s soccer matches.  Sorely missing their star Abby Wambach, who suffered a broken leg last month, the US team gave up two goals in the first four minutes to Norway and struggled the entire time en route to losing the match.  Let’s hope that they get their act together because they now sit in last place in Group G.

Something I found extremely interesting, though, was the fact that the United States team was playing without the US Soccer badge that is usually worn over the heart.  Looks like the logo was also missing from the shorts (see official game shorts here).  As a matter of fact, there was not a US crest to be found on the field of play today, not even by the goalie, which left the American team looking, ummm, naked.  But not like this or this, which I’m sure all of you are upset about. Surely this omission had something to do with the team losing its mojo today.

Anybody have any clue why the team went crest-less today?  Let me know in the comments.

We Did It! Nowitzki to Carry German Flag at Olympics

6 Aug

With some thanks to all who signed the petition for Dirk Nowitzki, the big German will be the his country’s official flag bearer for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  On another note, what is up with that haircut?  Of course we’d expect this type of dome artistry from someone like the “Tru Warier” Ron Artest, but the Olympic rings carved into Dirk’s head proves that you never really know what this guy is gonna do.  To his benefit, about half of his teammates are currently looking just as silly with their head rings.  Let’s see if this look makes it to the court. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. Congrats, Mr. Nowitzki.

KOTW: Pigeon New Balance 575

4 Aug

Sneakerheads in the know will remember all the fuss caused by the Pigeon Dunks a few years back, whose worldwide run of 150 pairs nearly caused a riot in NYC when they were released on February 22, 2005.  This naturally led to a number of fakes as people everywhere paid up to $3,000 for the chance to sport that sick grey and orange (pink?) colorway. Well now that same fresh aura, designed by original Pigeon craftsman Jeff Staple, has been transplanted onto the New Balance 575 and the results are admittedly head-turning.  This release will be slightly easier to get your hands on (144 pairs per region, 800 global distribution).  Sneaker Freaker exclusive. Check here for an interview with Jeff Staple about the Pigeon NB 575.  More photos after the jump. [via Sneaker Freaker.]

Topless at Fenway Park

27 Jul

When I first saw this picture, which dates from 1983, I figured that it must’ve been an Orioles game, with many of the fans in the stands wearing orange shirts.  But upon closer inspection it became clear that the majority of the supporters in Fenway Park’s outfield were topless.  Speaking with a co-worker who was going to ballgames in the early 1980s, this was apparently not such an out-of-the-ordinary sight.

Now I know that there is no rule about wearing shirts at the ballpark (for men at least, or is there?), but I can’t recall seeing this today.  I mean, to see such nudity on a large scale would surely catch my attention.  Has anybody seen this much skin at a game lately? Any ideas why or why not? How have you noticed how ballpark attire has changed in the last 25 years?

But the fact that the Red Sox are hosting the Brewers that day reminded me that these uniforms and this logo have always been among my favorites.

Let me know what you think about baseball topplessness, ill vintage graphic design, or the combination of powder blue and yellow in the comments.

Sneak Peek: Johnny Cupcakes LA shoppe

26 Jul

My boy Dave O hipped me to Johnny Cupcakes a while back, amused (as was I) with the bakery-themed store on Boston’s famed Newbury Street. O yeah, and they also design some pretty fresh shtuff. Well Johnny Cupcakes is officially moving to the West Coast soon, opening a new store on Melrose Ave. in LA on August 2 (big party, we hear). Here Johnny gives us an update on the construction of the Los Angeles shoppe.  Really like the cool vintage feel going on here.  Check it out and let me know what you think.
